Mighty Guardians Of The Past
Following the highly successful Dragons’ exhibition, Sanja Jurca Avci was commissioned to
design another captivating temporary exhibition within the same dramatic space at
Ljubljana Castle. This year’s theme—Slovenia’s castles—transforms the long, narrow exhibition hall into a
visually dynamic exploration of the nation’s rich architectural heritage.
Between these five highlighted castles, a continuous horizontal display showcases over 100 additional Slovenian castles, emphasizing their collective historical significance.
A Layered Narrative of Castle Histories
From the very entrance, visitors encounter: High-level symbolic representations of five selected castles, ensuring they remain
visible from any vantage point within the exhibition. Dedicated units for each castle, featuring: A 3D castle symbol and detailed historical information,
a portrait of a historical figure connected to the castle. , a key exhibit revealing an artifact from the castle’s past. Each display unit includes a large, internally illuminated panel, presenting: A contemporary image of the castle, visible upon approach. A historical engraving, revealed only on the visitor’s return journey, offering a new perspective on departure.
Interactive screens invite visitors to explore Slovenia’s castle heritage and reflect on their transformation, turning the exhibition into a living experience.
An Interactive, Multi-Sensory Experience
At the end of the exhibition space and alongside the entrance staircase, interactive elements engage visitors, inviting them to: Explore the broader context of Slovenia’s castle heritage. Reflect on the transformation of these fortresses over time. By blending immersive storytelling, layered perspectives, and interactive engagement, Mighty Guardians of the Past transforms a historical exhibition into a living experience, reinforcing the enduring presence of castles in Slovenia’s cultural landscape.
