CUBUKLU VALLEY RESIDENTIAL

Istanbul, Türkiye
2015

Located on the northern boundary of Çubuklu Valley, one of Istanbul’s rare in-city forested areas, the Çubuklu Valley Residential project is a pioneering example of environmentally conscious urban development. As Istanbul expands, this project presents an internationally significant model for the sympathetic integration of residential spaces within natural ecosystems. Positioned at the lowest point of the valley, the site sits above a natural aquifer, historically formed when the valley was dammed to create a reservoir. Though the dam no longer exists, remnants of historic engineering structures remain. A stream continues to flow through the site, enriching the biodiversity of the landscape. While less densely forested than adjacent areas, the land still plays a vital role in the ecological diversity of Çubuklu Valley.

Design Sketch Highlighting Landscape and Settlement Interface

The Landscape

The project is deeply rooted in landscape integration, ensuring the development coexists with its natural surroundings. Key landscape features include: A new public park, forming a buffer zone along the northern boundary, extending the Çubuklu forest area and maintaining a natural green corridor. Nature corridors, connecting the existing forest with the new public park, ensuring the protection and enhancement of biodiversity throughout the development. The integration of existing flora and fauna into all areas of the project, fostering a seamless relationship between nature and residential life.

A sustainable residential community where nature, water, and urban life coexist in harmony.

Çubuklu Valley Residential ensures sustainable water management by protecting the aquifer, controlling flow, preventing flooding, and maintaining ecological balance.

Water Resources

Sitting over a natural aquifer, Çubuklu Valley Residential is designed to preserve and manage its water resources responsibly. A stream runs through the site, making water management a key part of the development strategy. The project incorporates landscape features such as pools and channels to: Control surface water and groundwater flow. Reduce the risk of flooding downstream. Prevent depletion and pollution of the aquifer. Manage runoff from buildings and impermeable surfaces to maintain the natural water balance. This holistic approach ensures the sustainable management of natural water systems, reinforcing the development’s ecological sensitivity.

Çubuklu Valley Residential sets a new standard for sustainable urban living, where walkability, eco-friendly mobility, and nature coexist in harmony.

Movement and Access

Committed to sustainability and reducing environmental impact, the developer prioritizes pedestrian-friendly urban design. The primary mode of movement within the site will be walking, encouraged by well-lit, well-landscaped pedestrian pathways. Safe, accessible walkways will connect the development to other areas of Çubuklu, fostering an active and walkable community. A comprehensive Travel Plan will guide the shift away from car dependency, promoting public transit, cycling, and sustainable mobility solutions. By placing nature, sustainability, and community at its core, Çubuklu Valley Residential sets a new standard for environmentally integrated urban living, proving that modern development and natural preservation can go hand in hand.
