BEHIND THE WALLS OF A MONASTERY
“Behind the Walls of a Monastery” is an architectural exhibition that narrates the layered history of Mekinje Monastery through the contrasting lives of two religious orders: the Poor Clares and the Ursulines. The spatial design reflects the nature of each order—metal bars emphasize the cloistered discipline of the Poor Clares, while open, school-like layouts highlight the Ursulines’ focus on education. A continuous timeline installation connects the two zones, bridging centuries of monastic transformation through immersive storytelling.

The history of Mekinje Monastery is shown in the two chosen spaces of the monastery through the story of the two Catholic nuns’ orders who subsequently used to live in the Mekinje monastery: Poor Clares and Ursulines. As the two orders are very different, their contrasting characteristics were used as an inspiration for the exhibition design.
