The project transforms an existing concrete structure into a sustainable, climate-responsive innovation hub that harmonizes environmental intelligence with industrial heritage.

i5.0 HUB
Konjice, Slovenia
2025
The i5.0 Hub in Slovenske Konjice transforms an unfinished concrete structure into a vibrant hub of innovation and community. Retaining the industrial character of the former Konus Institute, it embodies Industry 5.0 values — human–machine collaboration, sustainability, and digital innovation. Through adaptive reuse, the project revitalizes a dormant landmark as a catalyst for regional growth and a symbol of transition from industrial past to a future-ready ecosystem.

The architectural strategy is rooted in a deep understanding of the site’s environmental context. Sun path and wind analyses inform the building’s orientation, façade design, and passive systems. Vertical and horizontal shading optimize daylight, while a central solar chimney enables natural ventilation and reduces energy use. Rainwater harvesting and ground heat exchangers further enhance sustainability. The design retains the existing concrete frame, softened through a refined architectural rhythm. Ground-floor commercial spaces activate public engagement, and the repurposed vertical shaft — now hosting the solar chimney and radio antenna — becomes a symbolic landmark of transformation from industrial shell to innovation hub.
The i5.0 Hub: a sustainable landmark for creativity, collaboration, and community.

Inside, the i5.0 Hub reimagines a dormant structure as a resilient, multi-level workplace. The ground floor connects with the city through public functions — reception, retail, café, and a radio station — while upper levels offer flexible offices and a rooftop restaurant with panoramic views. A warm, authentic material palette combines exposed concrete with light wood, acoustic textiles, and matte finishes, balancing rawness and refinement. Biophilic design principles further enhance comfort and creativity, linking the workspace to natural light and texture.
The i5.0 Hub is a human-centered space fostering well-being and collaboration.
