Once Upon A Time

Ljubljana, Slovenia
2019

“Once Upon a Time” is an immersive exhibition inspired by Slovenian folk tales, set in the historic Kazemate Hall of Ljubljana Castle. Each of the six tales is presented through illuminated illustrations and display cabinets nestled within curved tassel installations that define individual storytelling zones. Designed as a looping path, the exhibition offers a layered spatial experience that engages visitors in both directions.

The exhibition theme of Slovenian folk tales inspired the idea of creating a “fairy tale landscape” in the Kazemate Hall at the Ljubljana Castle. The exhibition explored storytelling, writing and illustrating fairy tales, book publications, and theatrical performances using six folk tales, each presented also with an enlarged illuminated book illustration.

Illuminated tassels hung from the ceiling in variously positioned arcs and formed a lighting element reaching into the sky in the depth of the exhibition space. Each of the six chosen fairy tales was presented within its own tassle arc, into which its own exhibition element was positioned. This was a cabinet featuring a backlit book illustration in the front, and in the back, just like a real cabinet, it hid shelves, drawers, showcases, and exhibition texts connected to the particular fairy tale.

Since the visitors’ path was a loop – visitors returned along the same path they had entered – this kind of design intervention was  essential for an engaging experience in both directions.
