ENVISIONING A CITY: FUTURE PERSPECTIVES FROM NORTH AND SOUTH
On May 22, Avcı Architects’ Founding Partner Selçuk Avcı participated in the “Envisioning a City: Future Perspectives from North and South” session in Portorož, Slovenia. The event brought together four distinguished city architects—two from northern cities and two from southern cities of the SEE region—to share their visions for the future of urban development.
Each participant delivered a 10-minute presentation, offering perspectives on urban transformation, sustainability, and resilience, and exploring how different cultural, climatic, and economic conditions shape urban planning strategies.
Following these presentations, a dynamic debate took place, delving deeper into key challenges cities face today: climate adaptation, infrastructure renewal, housing strategies, smart technologies, public space revitalization, and inclusive urban growth policies. The discussion highlighted both common ground and differing approaches between northern and southern city-making practices.
This exchange of ideas shed light on diverse methodologies and priorities while uncovering potential synergies for sustainable and forward-thinking urban development across the SEE region. The event emphasized the critical role of architecture and planning in shaping resilient and livable cities for the future.
